Putting in a pair of hearing aids can be frustrating. When inserting the device into your ear canal, whistling, squealing, or feedback may occur. That is why it is extremely important to be careful and follow the steps below scrupulously to insert your hearing aids safely.
1. Lower the volume
Many people experience feedback and whistling when inserting a device into their ear canal. This is very often simply because the device's volume is set too high. By finding the optimal volume level (i.e., amplification suited to your hearing loss), you will significantly reduce the risk of feedback or whistling.
Before inserting the device into your ear, use the volume control to set it to 20% or lower. You can then insert the device into your ear and adjust the volume as needed.
2. Locate the microphone and do not press on it
When putting in your new pair of hearing aids, keep in mind how the device works. It is equipped with a tiny microphone located on the flat face of the casing, right opposite the removal wire. Like any standard microphone, your hearing aid can produce feedback if you apply pressure to it.
That is why it is best to grasp the device by the sides when inserting it into your ear canal: this avoids pressing on the microphone and limits the risk of feedback. That said, if you accidentally touch the microphone during insertion, it is not a problem. Once the device is fully inserted and your hands are removed, the feedback should stop.
3. Try different tips to find the perfect seal
The main reason for feedback is that sound finds a way to escape the ear and return to the microphone. This is why it is so important to get a perfect seal! A perfect seal between the tip and the ear canal prevents excess sound from escaping and returning to the microphone.
Take the time to find the right-sized tip, one that completely seals your ear canal—often, you need to switch to a larger tip that ensures a tighter seal. This will reduce feedback and improve long-term comfort.
If you follow all these steps, you will most likely be able to resolve the whistling and feedback issue when inserting your hearing device.
If, despite these steps, you are still unable to resolve the issue, your device may be defective. To obtain a replacement, or to try another model, you can contact our support service, who will be happy to help you.
